The FBI has arrested D.C. Council member Trayon White Sr. The arrest, confirmed by Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, took place on Sunday afternoon.
Details surrounding the arrest and the specific allegations against White remain unclear at this time. The FBI’s Washington field office has yet to comment on the matter, and neither White nor his chief of staff have responded to inquiries from several outlets.
Mendelson reported that the arrest occurred at about 2 p.m., expressing surprise as he was previously unaware of any ongoing investigation into White. A Democrat representing Ward 8 since 2016, White faced scrutiny earlier this year when the D.C. Office of Campaign Finance imposed a $20,000 fine on him and his campaign treasurer.
In addition to the fine, White reportedly owed nearly $59,000 in public funds received through the D.C. Fair Elections Program. The program, designed to provide public financing for campaigns, requires rigorous auditing and reporting.
White’s campaigns in the last two election cycles, including his 2022 mayoral bid, have faced multiple issues with financial reporting. Despite attempts to address those issues, recent audits have flagged White’s campaign for noncompliance with D.C. Code due to incomplete financial records.
The situation continues to develop, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
Appreciate, as always, Stacy Brown’s quick coverage! Looking forward to reading the Informer’s coverage of what happens next.
The man needs to be locked up. He’s another Marion Barry and we don’t need that in DC anymore. He’s an UMES alumni? That’s unfortunate
