D.C. police are investigating the drive by shooting death Friday of a 6-year-old girl in Southeast at the corners of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X avenues.
The incident, which took the life of Nyiah Courtney and left five people injured, occurred happened shortly after 11 p.m., according to Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee. The child was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Mayor Muriel Bowser referenced the shooting Saturday in a tweet, stating that “our city is heartbroken” and that “there is no way to make sense of the callousness or cruelty. We will never accept gun violence as normal, and we must never allow people to get away with murdering our children,” she added, urging the public to contact the police with any information about the incident.
Contee announced a $60,000 reward for information Saturday at a press conference.
The shooting is the latest in a spate of gun violence that has gripped US cities this summer. There have been 361 mass shootings so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, according to CNN, which added that with states lifting Covid-19 restrictions and more people out in warmer weather, cities have been experiencing a surge in shootings and homicide numbers.
While no arrests have been made, police continue to look for a gray or silver four-door sedan.
