That Washington, D.C. is a center for Black economic activity is nothing new, for that has been the case since Reconstruction. Black population growth in the Sunbelt is the story because it seems that the trek North that many African Americans made after the start of the 20th century until the 1970s has largely halted. Black people are moving south because of nicer weather, more economic opportunities and a slower pace of life. Also, white commentators are now referring to Black majority cities in a coded way, with phrases like “Metro Atlanta”, “Metro Birmingham”, and “Metro Jackson.” That’s their way of letting their racial kin know that the suburbs are still “ours.” By the way, Houston and Dallas have never been majority Black cities even though they have hundreds of thousands of African Americans. Nevertheless, both cities have managed to elect Black mayors. Good reporting, Stacy.
