Former two-division world champion Lamont Peterson will fight former welterweight world champion Sergey Lipinets on Sunday, March 24 at MGM National Harbor in a 12-round welterweight match of Premier Boxing Champions broadcast live on FS1 and FOX Deportes.
“Lamont Peterson vs. Sergey Lipinets is a classic 50-50 matchup that is sure to include drama, action and intrigue,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Lipinets is looking to conquer a second division after winning a 140-pound title, while Peterson is out to show he’s still amongst the welterweight elite. Peterson will be joined by his brother, Anthony Peterson, for a true homecoming event featuring two of the District of Columbia’s most popular fighters. Anthony will have a tall task in former champion Argenis Mendez, and it should all equal to a great night.”
During the final press conference held Friday at MGM National Harbor Lamont Peterson said, “I know we’re at the top level and I’m facing a top guy. I’m looking to capitalize on the opportunity and move forward. Lipinets is a tough guy. He only has about 15 pro fights, but he was able to move through the ranks pretty fast. That got my attention and lets you know that he’s definitely coming to win.”
Lamont’s opponent Lipinets said, “I know that a win over Lamont will get me the big fights that I’m looking for. I want to be a champion at welterweight and that starts with making a statement on Sunday. I have a very tough opponent in front of me and I’m motivated by the challenge. I’m in this sport to be in the biggest and best fights. People say this is 50-50, so I’m excited to show why I’m better.”
Once-beaten contender Anthony Peterson also faced off against his opponent, former world champion Argenis Mendez.
The fight will be a nationally televised event for the first time since 2006.
Super welterweight contender Jamontay Clark, also in attendance at the press conference, will face unbeaten Vernon Brown in the televised opening at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
The FS1 prelims broadcast will also feature Brandon Quarles (21-4-1, 10 KOs) battling Kansas-native Aaron Coley (15-2-1, 7 KOs) in an eight-round middleweight bout, plus Baltimore’s Lorenzo Simpson (2-0, 2 KOs) taking on Jaime Meza (pro debut) in a four-round super middleweight attraction.
