Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold its seventh annual Celebrate Africa Festival on Sept. 22, part of what is recognized in the county as African Heritage Month.
Event organizers said the festival acknowledges the contributions and impact of the African immigrant community on the county and the Washington metropolitan area, while celebrating the beauty, vibrancy and cultural relevance of the work of African artisans, musicians and performing artists.
The inaugural festival was held on Oct. 14, 2018, with second-year attendance swelling to over 2,000 people. Notably, the metropolitan area is home to the fourth-largest African immigrant community in the United States.
This year’s activities showcase the rich cultures of the African continent and will feature performances from musicians from Prince George’s County and beyond.
Supporting businesses that support the African community of Prince George’s County is a priority for this festival, and the Celebrate Festival Vendor Village has been described as one of the best examples of genuine African customs and traditions in the northeast United States. People will be able to peruse the work of local craftspeople selling textiles, jewelry, and bath products.
On display will be artwork from celebrated international artist Shiri Achu, hand-crafted drums from Hands on Drums, and wares from local businesses including Delkis Collections, Kwamboka, Afrique Fashion House, Malik’s Fashion Boutique, Doors to Africa, Candles with Attitude, Sweet Splendor Bath and Body, and more.
Explore the flavors of the African continent from local food trucks representing the best of African cuisine across the region including Shewa Ethiopian, Gidi Chow, Bigmama Kitchen, and 1936 Food Truck.
This family-friendly event is free and suitable for all ages. The festival will take place from 1 p.m.-6 p.m. at the Fairwood Community Park, 12390 Fairwood Parkway in Bowie, Maryland.
